The Monastery of Santa María de Carracedofounded in the 10th century, is one of the most important monastic monuments in El Bierzo and a treasure of the region's historical heritage. Originally built as a royal palace by King Bermudo II, it was ceded to the Benedictine monks in the 12th century, who transformed it into an influential religious and cultural center.
